ABOUT VITAMIN B12

WHAT IS VITAMIN B12

B12 (also known as cobalamin) is a vitamin which plays a part in the integrity of every cell in the body, therefore it is essential to all systems within the body.

It’s key roles are in the production of red blood cells which carry oxygen around the body, healthy functioning of the brain and nervous system, and the construction of DNA. Therefore any part of the body can suffer the effects of deficiency, from your DNA through to your mental well being.

The only natural source of vitamin B12 is from foods of animal origin, such as meat, dairy, fish, eggs and poultry. Because of this it is important for vegans and vegetarians to ensure that they supplement their diets with vitamin B12.

Although B12 is a water soluble vitamin, a healthy person can store up to 5 years worth in the liver, kidneys and other organs. However, neither overdose nor toxicity are a concern as the body will only store what it can use, excreting the excess via the urine.
